The bodies are piling up around Los Angeles and Matt's on the case. The victims all seem to have one thing in common--Mother Goose. Each victim has a name similar to the name in the nursery rhymes and they are finding their demise much the same as the Mother Goose characters. Can Matt stay ahead of this killer and try to figure out who his next victim will be? He has to work fast.

Reception to this story was good, but several readers were disappointed that it wasn't longer. They wanted a novel. Well, novels run 70,000 words and there just isn't enough material for a novel. However, I did add more material and more than doubled it's original size. And I added illustrations for each chapter. This version ended with more than 20,000 words and the story is much fuller and more exciting. See if you don't agree. It'll be a well-spent 99 cents.

The Cooper series consists of a total of 90 stories to date. This is one of my favorites.

NOTE: This is a two-fer! I read and reviewed this book under the title "Cooper Collection #007": The Mother Goose Murders. HOWEVER, (for those of you who are confused because that is not what you are reading or considering), this same book is ALSO available under the title "Illustrated Mother Goose Murders". So when I talk about Sgt. Dan Hollister, Matt (or Cooper), I am referring to the characters from the series the Cooper Collection where Matt Cooper is a private investigator who often works with Sgt. Dan Hollister (who was his boss when he was a cop).

I had not even realized this situation myself until I noticed I read the book under one title, posted the review under the second title, and had the review show up under BOTH titles! So I wanted YOU to be clear about what you were reading just in case it was not the title you had expected!

***************

From the description of the book I was expecting this to be a collection of short stories with each chapter being its own short story based on separate Mother Goose tales. That was not the case. Instead, the entire book was one short story. Lots of murders, but all one story.

As with many of the other Cooper stories, this one opens with Sgt. Dan Hollister asking for Matt's help with one of his cases: he has three corpses in the morgue. All of them were blind, and all of them have had their "tails cut off with a carving knife". Or so it would appear. (Thus the Mother Goose reference.)

Once Matt is convinced the case is worth his time, he is on the case; and it is time to see how well you remember those Mother Goose rhymes. To be honest, I dropped one star just because there were so many murders in the book: it was almost too much.

Even Matt couldn't take any more! As he and Hollister were heading to the bar for a drink (toward the end of the book), Hollister got a call about another body that was found. Matt said to go without him: he was definitely going for that much needed drink! (In other words, even for this ex cop turned gumshoe, enough was enough.)

While this is still a "clean" read, it does get a little gruesome before it ends. Nothing like some things I have read, but just too much of it for the Cooper collection. Just a lot more than I would have expected.

But that being said, I still enjoyed the story because it DID manage to thread so many murders together based on the Mother Goose rhymes, AND there was some interesting background information given on several of the rhymes.

Bottom line is that I would recommend this book to older teens and up. Too much violence for younger readers.

The Illustrated Mother Goose Murders Matt Cooper Private Eye Book 5 edition by Bill Bernico Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

While I quite enjoyed this book, I was mildly put off by the number of typos. I haven't read anything else by this author, so I don't know if this is unusual for his books. Also, while a fun pun, the joke about the "crack hoe" was maybe about 50 years too early, as the book is set in the 1940s.

I would have also liked it to be longer, but enjoyed it as it was.

Bill - if you read this I'm happy to proofread for you in future!
I like the old time hard boiled PI. Inventive story line. Bill Bernico doesn't disappoint.
This is a gum shoe story. The facts about the origin of fairy tales is interesting. A fun read not heavy in any way.
This one was really good and the mother goose stories that was being used to kill was just great.
Although a bit too gory for me, it was a cute premise and so I just kept going to the end. It felt like it ended abruptly. Personally, I wouldn't have felt my dollar was wasted (although I got it free) and I will probably read more of this author since I liked the humor.
~Author Bill Bernico wrote a whole series of relatively short stories about Matt Cooper…a somewhat rough around the edges…often down on his luck…private eye. Matt has a set of standards, which sometimes might seem questionable, but in the end, he does want to see justice done.
~Written like the old detective stories, Sam Spare or Phillip Marlow, these are just plain good P.I. stories.
~I’ve read over a dozen of ‘em and liked every one of ‘em.
Read all the multi-packs and shorts packs long ago, since 2012. The author has gotten better with age/practice. I've read all of the Cooper stories (1 - 230) and several of Mr. Bernico's short stories and most have not disappointed me. You'll find some poorly written or predictable stories, but for the most part they are fair to good.

The Cooper series are better, but there's a few stinkers, too. They're great for a coffee break or a few minutes to relax.
